The Stigma Surrounding Mental Illness Persists

RECENTLY WE LEARNED that Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. was suffering from serious depression. This was after several months in which reports were varied, some indicating only that Jackson was being treated for an unnamed medical condition, and some citing exhaustion, which often is a euphemism used to avoid a mental illness label. Throughout the reports speculation has continued, including focus on the cause of the illness, the plans for treatment, and, of course, Jackson's future ability to resume his high profile position, particularly given the public opinions and lack of understanding about mental illness.
